Hi Foobella, I believe these types of coffins were used temporarily, before burial took place. Before the days of (gulp) embalming.

Perfectly creepy. I actually used to know someone who embalmed for a living. Guess it was a family affair. Still really creepy. Love the history behind it though. Thanks Holly for the story. I am SO ready for Halloween.
