Wilson's Woodpecker

Last week I went to see the closing exhibit at the newly renovated Nation Sporting Library.
The little gem of the show, in my humble opinion, was Mrs. Bunny Mellon's book of
North American Birds by the great ornithologist, Alexander Wilson.
Published in 1802, the book was opened to the plate illustrating a willow oak and pileated woodpecker.
Now I know why they encase these precious works behind glass. It's much easier to clean up the drool.
It would be a slice of heaven to be able to turn all of the pages.
hint. hint.

  1. Gorgeous piece...sounds like a fabulous book! I enjoy your work so much (and am equally rooting for Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley!)

  2. Sarah: After last night's episode I can tell we're going to be waiting a very long time for those two to come to their senses!

  3. wondering what kind of pen / nib you are using for your wonderfully loopy lettering?

  4. Jeannie: I'm using a simple quill type nib. If there is a size, I don't know it off hand, though I can check at the studio tomorrow. It is pretty small, but a little pressure make a lovely line.

  6. I'd enclose your artwork in glass so *I* don't drool over them. Sigh!

  7. Beautiful - and the books does sound drool-worthy!
I had a pileated here this morning, knocking away at one of my diseased beech trees.

And I see from some comments that you are watching Downton Abbey. Yes, Lady Mary & Matthew need to figure it out quick!
