One thing I love about winter is that spotting bird nests is a little easier
without the tree foliage to shield these treasures from view.
These are two beautiful old nests found today.
The large one was in my magnolia tree, practically right in front of me all year,
though I just noticed it and I have no idea what kind of bird nested there.
The tiny one, a goldfinch nest perhaps, was in the hedgerows on my afternoon walk.
Constructed of grasses and leaves, it measures about three or four inches,
and was full of tiny seeds!
So precious.
At first I read 'a goldfish nest'; then I saw it said 'goldfinch' and was slightly disappointed. What if the one you're not sure about was a goldfish nest? You never know...
ReplyDeleteReifyn: that would be quite peculiar and yet….
ReplyDeleteHolly-- you're a woman after my own heart! Beautiful nests-- such great finds, and the photos are just as lovely! Happy 2014 to you! XO!
ReplyDeleteKathi: you have one of my very first and favorite nest paintings - with tiny seeds! I wish you all the best in 2014!
DeleteA lovely natural post to start the new year. I love to see birds gathering their bits and pieces to make their nests.
ReplyDeleteJayne: Me too. I particularly love watching the wrens, as they "test out" various nesting box locations!
ReplyDeleteMy brother is quite the birder and I'm amazed at how he can identify empty nests, just by what they are made of and how they are constructed. Your photos are quite lovely.
ReplyDeleteKaren: maybe he can ID these nests!
