Decisions

Mixing up washes on my palette.

Color inspiration comes from a miscellany of objects on my desk at home.

GB Hatchery: Black Swallowtails

This summer I have enjoyed rearing monarch butterflies again
as well as eastern black swallowtails!
Swallowtails lay eggs on host plants in the carrot family:
queen anne's lace, dill, fennel, parsley.
It's fascinating to watch them eat and grow as caterpillars and finally form a chrysalis.
This chrysalis turned brown and now looks like a piece of bark.
I'm not sure if it will emerge this year.
Late season swallowtails diapause in the chrysalis stage and overwinter,
emerging the following spring.
Stay tuned...

Studio Days

Proofing some new large and small prints of my domed nest.

A collection of prints on my work table at the studio.
***
I have had so many questions and emails lately about printing giclee prints.
All of my prints are printed with archival inks on 100 percent cotton rag paper.
If you are an artist just getting started I have more information
on my FAQ page on my website.
If you are a collector do check out my shop policies page to read a bit
more about my paintings and prints and how to care for them.

I'll have a shop update soon!

Drawn to Nature

Cover Drawn to Nature journal
I'm so excited to share some news with you…
Last year I licensed my work for a nature sketchbook and journal.
It's filled with new images and favorites from the GB archive.

Inside Drawn to Nature
Drawn to Nature encourages you to take a closer look at the natural world around you.
Each journal includes a pencil and plenty of space for you to write and draw.
My favorite part is a pocket filled with envelopes and stickers
for gathering things you find.

Forest and trees
You can pre-order Drawn to Nature on Amazon now.
It will be in stock in early July in the USA and later in July for Amazon UK.
Do check with your local booksellers as well!

Busy Bees

Beekeeping from the beginning.

Beekeeping from the beginning.

Beekeeping from the beginning.

Beekeeping from the beginning.
Things have been busy here at the GB studio.
I'm working on a few different illustration projects and that's always exciting,
but I look forward to simply painting for me - which seems like a luxury these days!
I took a beekeeping class this winter which is something I've always wanted to do.
I helped my neighbors install packages of honeybees into their hives last week.
So far so good. We checked the hives on Sunday and the queens are alive and well!
That's me with our mentor who is firing up the smoker.
We really didn't need it. The bees are so calm and docile.
I'll look forward to helping my neighbors this spring and summer.
Hopefully I will have beehives of my own one day!

Making Plans

Birds are very distracting when I am trying to work. 🐦
I'm working on roughs for a fun illustration project.
I can't live without my kneaded eraser!
Making plans.
I really do enjoy drawing. Illustration projects often require a bit more planning.
Piecing some ideas together. ✂️
I rarely draw out ideas in advance of a painting when I'm painting for myself.
Working on roughs for a fun illustration project.
Sometimes it's fun to work differently, play with new ideas,
and change up my routine just a little bit!

Old Dogs. New Tricks.

old dogs. new tricks. Old Dogs. New Tricks. New Year!
Happy new year all! I hope 2015 is off to a great start for you.
I'm pleased to say that I finally launched my WEBSITE!
I had to take my own advice and just put it out there.
I can tinker endlessly and the new year seemed like a great time to go live.
You will also see a few small changes to my blog as well.

Watercolor palette The GB sudio is humming along. My paint and brushes are out.
Truly, I never suffer from a lack of inspiration and ideas.
My goal this year is to focus just a wee bit more.

Winter berries. I keep dreaming about doing more botanicals.
These dried winter berries are simply divine.
So, I think a good place to begin is working with what's around me.
I always think it's best not to make things too complicated.
Do you make resolutions or set goals for the year?
