Waking the Dragon

waking the dragon
This morning I happened upon a group of sleeping dragonflies in the tall grassy fields.

waking the dragon II
They were a little sluggish at this early morning hour,

waking the dragon VII
so I was able to coax a couple out of the grass for a closer look.

waking the dragon IV
Their wings sparkled with little flecks of gold.
Eventually they flew away.

Beautiful dragonflies & gorgeous flower -- is it a cardoon?

luanne: It is a thistle for sure, though I don't think it is an edible variety.

These photos are wonderful, thanks for sharing!
And to Luanne: thistles are from the same family as cardoons (and artichokes), so you could eat them if you had to. I haven't eaten one, but read it on a survival book somewhere.
