Meet Goliath

Perhaps one of the strangest collections you will ever see.
Space Farms is truly an American roadside attraction.
Goliath, one of the largest Kodiak bears in captivity,
now graces the entrance hall as a twelve foot centerpiece.
Both a zoo and museum, this place is endlessly fascinating.
Space Farms houses the most eclectic and unusual exhibits:
a menagerie of wild animals, taxidermy, antique cars, farm equipment,
rifles, and the curious ephemera of the Space family.

Love Struck

My dear Starlings
Star-crossed. Just like Romeo and Juliet.
A little noir. A little tragic. A little Elizabethan.
She said it was the Nightingale.
He said it was the Lark.

Chorus

The cicadas are all around us.

Humming in the trees.
A big buggy chorus. Very loud.

These little creatures are available in my shop.

Take Ten

Sometimes you have to take ten.
A little time out in the day.

It's summertime after all.
Why not take a dip at the village pool?

Maybe work tomorrow.

Archive | Eating Flies

I've been thinking about making a book of watercolors.
So, I went looking through my old books.
Remembering, reminiscing.

This one is called Eating Flies.
It is an accordion style book, which I made in 2000.

How time flies.

Old Bay

A trip to Annapolis, Maryland ...

Would not be complete without a visit to Cantler's.

Our favorite crab house.

Sitting outside in the hot summer sun.

Eating Maryland Blue Crabs with dear friends.
A delicious day seasoned with lots of Old Bay.

Not A Sparrow

Yesterday on our morning walk,
Lulu and I heard the flapping of wings.

We thought it was an injured bird.
It was certainly big enough.

It was a giant silkworm moth with a torn wing.
Polyphemus moths are in the same family as the luna moth
A beautiful, rusty brown specimen.

They only live for one week.
Nature can be so cruel.

Barking Lunatic

More logs for your viewing pleasure.
Soon to be in my shop.

I don't know about you, but I can't get enough!
I would love to do an entire wall of them.

Pathway

It's blazing hot outside and I'm thinking about firewood.
We live in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains without a fireplace.
I know, it's crazy. We do have a fire pit, but it's not the same.
We have a huge wood pile which has inspired many paintings.

I have often wondered what to do with all the wood.
I found these beautiful photographs taken by Katy Elliot.
Now I have an idea of how to use my logs.
Make a pathway.

A Blur

Two circus dogs joined us for the weekend.
Ellie and Pip.

Their feet barely touch the ground.

Lulu joins them for a romp.
Like my pictures, it has been a blur.

Demented and Sad

"Demented and sad, but social."
My favorite line from The Breakfast Club.
I think that sums it up perfectly for me.
Remembering John Hughes.
I love his movies. I grew up on his movies.
Do you have a favorite line from one of his films?

Wild Carrot

Filling the cracks with Queen Anne's Lace.

Even the weeds look lovely on this fine summer evening.

Logs

Logs are visually appealing to me.
They are natural, rustic and modern.

I love the end grain and the concentric circles.

The rings are a history of the tree,
a window into its life.

Unsolved Mystery

I've had my eye on this pod for months.
It's been hanging in my Rose of Sharon shrub.
I thought it might be a chrysalis.

Too much time has passed without change or transformation.
My curiosity got the best of me.
I decided to dissect it.

This little hairy pod was inside.
It was filled with brown goo.
Mystery unsolved.
Any ideas?
